In My Kitchen: November 2018

It’s November! Time really does fly when you’re having fun…well…if you count taxiing children around and throwing birthday parties and studying fun!?!

In my kitchen this month…

We bought three 2L jugs from Kmart for $6 each last week so that we can really up our iced tea game now that the weather is warming up. Refrigerator tea is the way to go here – just chuck 4 teabags in a container, fill it up with tap water and put it in the fridge for 24 hours. Then just fish out the tea bags and pour over ice. This works with any tea, here we have one bottle of mint (left) and one bottle of rooibos (right) and I’m starting a third bottle (middle) of peach chamomile. If you like your iced tea sweetened, our go to is a little bit of apple juice (no added sugar) and this sparkling apple juice from Aldi fits the bill plus adds a little fizz. We stocked up on them when they were in store a few weeks ago with it in mind that we’d have iced tea punch for Christmas.

I ordered a bag of King Arthur Flour’s White Whole Wheat Flour from overseas and it’s finally arrived. Now I can do their new Bake the Bag challenge which has replaced their Bakealong feature. This bag cost us a pretty penny, so I’m planning to be very careful with the measuring each week.

“New” dining chairs…we’ve had the chairs around the table for a good 7 years and we bought them second hand when we lived in Sydney. We’ve recovered them in a fabric we found that was waterproof/wipe clean from Ikea and since our family has grown and we have visitors quite regularly, 6 chairs just isn’t enough. So I found some similar chairs on Gumtree and now I’ve just got to work out what to do about the cushion covers as they don’t match and Ikea no longer stock that fabric. I now have a project on my hands that isn’t as simple as I thought it would be.

Of course I cannot go past the best thing that is in my kitchen this month, our new cooktop and oven! Hallelujah!!! Our landlord has been very kind to us and gotten us a much bigger and better oven than the one there previously and similarly the cooktop actually fits good sized pots and pans on all four elements at once. We could not be happier and I cannot wait to get back to good bread baking and to finally make macarons again!

My cookbook “shelf” atm – looking pretty sparse really – but so glad to have Bravetart and The Fearless Baker out from the library that I may as well have no other books on the shelf. =)
