In My Kitchen: January 2019

It’s 2019!!! We’ve started off the year quite relaxed after a very hectic couple of weeks. Aaron worked the night shift both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, so I’m only now just starting to feel like it’s holidays. We’ve been doing some cleaning up and organizing and there’s still heaps left to do, in between games of Carcassonne and watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In my kitchen this month…out with the old… I’ve decided to retire this Christmas dinnerset we got way back in 2002. It was the only one around at the time within our price range and it’s only enough for 8 people (although we lost a side plate a few years ago), and we have at least 9 here for Christmas each year. I’m swinging back and forth as to whether I’ll get a new Christmas dinnerset or buy some proper China that can then be used at all special occasions – Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc. I don’t want bone china so it’s vegan friendly, but I do want something that is special. I’ll keep you posted on what we choose! Also being retired…one of our wedding presents from 2001…our Breville 4 slice toaster. This thing has moved with us 7 times and still toasts bread so we’ve never replaced it even though it’s rather old and weathered. Target had an awesome Boxing Day sale where they were clearing out this Sunbeam London 4 slice toaster for less than half price and so in with the new! I’ve been wanting a toaster like this for ages as I’m the lone ranger who likes warm bread rather than toast so it’s nice to have two temperature settings. And the controls being on the front have made it easy for Miss 7 to make herself toast in the morning without help. We’re happy with it so far, apart from not being able to close that bread station because the controls sit out just too far. Not sure if we’ll eventually move it out and put something else there, but we’re keeping it here for now. Also we’ve upgraded our kombucha vessel and of course it’s a cactus! This Kmart find was only $10 and it’s 1 gallon sized which I’ve seen most recipes online use. For Christmas we received some novelty kitchen items – Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney princess movie so I was so excited to be gifted Mrs Potts and Chip by my sister-in-law. We also received these awesome Star Wars planet tumblers from her family… 6 tumblers meaning 1 for each of us…I’ve already claimed Tattoine and my soon to be 13 year old has chosen the Death Star, no surprises there. Last but not least, though the least in value, this Oreo cookie tin we found on clearance. When I spotted these a couple months ago I *had* to have one as my mom always sends us any special flavored Oreos to try. Now I have a place to keep them and I thought this would look cool on the cabinet in the family area mixed in with our other vintage looking items. Well that’s it’s for me this month…nothing really exciting on the food front as we’re just trying to get through this hot weather with salads and anything that doesn’t require cooking. Hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing what’s in your kitchens this month!
